Key Aspects of a Successful Antibiotic Stewardship Program

Activity Description

Health-system pharmacists play a prominent role in the use of antibiotics in their institutions, and in the development of programs that result in good antibiotic stewardship practices. The goals of such programs include appropriate management of hospital-acquired infections and avoidance of antibiotic resistance. This supplement is designed as a one-stop resource for current information and practical solutions regarding antibiotic stewardship. The authors review current national initiatives and guidelines, summarize the potential impact of antibiotic stewardship on resistance, and demonstrate practical suggestions for initiating and maintaining antibiotic stewardship programs.
