Needle-Free
Connectors
Critical Research
Results: Can We Predict Infection Risk?

|
Activity Description
The risk of bloodstream infection
associated with the use of needle-free connectors for
central line access is an important issue in nursing care. A
broad classification system has been proposed as a guide to
infection risk. But does it differentiate the critical
design features that may play a role in risk reduction? The
newly revised CDC guideline for prevention of
catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) states:
"When needleless systems are used, a split septum valve may
be preferred over a mechanical valve due to increased risk
of infection with some mechanical valves." Many questions
remain regarding the risk of CRBSI with various connectors.
This webinar series will enhance the clinician's
understanding of device classification and will examine
recent data that give new perspective on risk factors
associated with the use of needle-free connectors. |
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, nurses will be
able to:
-
Identify the critical
factors associated with infection risks and the use of
needle-free connectors
-
Compare and contrast
research results on bacterial transfer and the risk of
CRBSI associated with different needle-free devices
-
Establish strategies
for minimizing the risk of CRBSI
