Program Description Approximately 20 million Americans - 1 in 9 U.S. adults - have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and another 20 million more are at increased risk for developing CKD. Early detection and treatment can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure. The two main causes of CKD are diabetes and high blood pressure, which are, together, responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases. If uncontrolled or poorly controlled, hypertension and diabetes can lead to renal damage that is dramatic, extensive and progressive.
