Hazardous Drugs: Is Your Practice
Putting Patients & Providers at Risk?

Activity Description
This CE activity will assess the many
factors in the safe handling of hazardous drugs (HDs).
Established HD safe-handling precautions, intended to
minimize risk to both patients and providers, will be
discussed. Participants will learn about safe-handling
practices both within the pharmacy environment and
throughout the healthcare facility. The entire spectrum of
HD management will be discussed from formulary and
purchasing, to storing, compounding, delivery,
administration, and disposal.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists and
pharmacy technicians will be able
to:

Summarize evidence of exposure to HDs due to workplace
practices

Outline the most recent guidelines for safe handling of
HDs

Define the pharmacy departments level of accountability
and responsibility for prevention of hazardous drug (HD)
exposure in the pharmacy and throughout the entire
facility

Identify real-life situations within and outside of the
pharmacy that can result in HD exposure for hospital
staff or patients

Outline actions that the pharmacy department and staff
can take to prevent HD exposures
