Hazardous Drugs: Is Your Practice Putting Patients & Providers at Risk?

Activity Description

This CE activity will assess the many factors in the safe handling of hazardous drugs (HDs). Established HD safe-handling precautions, intended to minimize risk to both patients and providers, will be discussed. Participants will learn about safe-handling practices both within the pharmacy environment and throughout the healthcare facility. The entire spectrum of HD management will be discussed from formulary and purchasing, to storing, compounding, delivery, administration, and disposal.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will be able to:

  • Summarize evidence of exposure to HDs due to workplace practices

  • Outline the most recent guidelines for safe handling of HDs

  • Define the pharmacy departments level of accountability and responsibility for prevention of hazardous drug (HD) exposure in the pharmacy and throughout the entire facility

  • Identify real-life situations within and outside of the pharmacy that can result in HD exposure for hospital staff or patients

  • Outline actions that the pharmacy department and staff can take to prevent HD exposures
