Program Description:
For healthcare providers, exposure to hazardous
drugs can lead to contamination and uptake. Are you one of
those at risk? Consequences of exposure include local
reactions, cancer, organ toxicity, fertility problems,
genetic damage, and birth defects. Although guidelines for
safe handling of hazardous drugs exist, exposures still
occur, suggesting that compliance is variable. This program
will review the risk of exposure to hazardous drugs, methods
to avoid exposure, and best practices for contamination
management.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, nurses, pharmacists, and
pharmacy technicians
will be able to:
- Define hazardous drugs and negative health effects
associated with exposure
- Identify work practices that present a risk of
exposure to hazardous drugs
- Outline workplace strategies and practices to reduce
exposure and prevent contamination from hazardous drugs
- Describe technological advances that may reduce the
exposure of healthcare providers to hazardous drugs
during compounding and administration
