Activity Description

This activity provides pharmacists, nurses, and allied healthcare providers with a contextual overview of HIV pathophysiology, immunology, and disease progression in both adult and adolescent populations. Acute HIV infection symptoms, viral loads, and antibody development are compared and contrasted with the symptoms and disease progression of full-blown AIDS. The activity offers foundational knowledge to the healthcare provider working in HIV treatment, in both the clinical latent phase and the active AIDS clinical phase.

Learning Objectives

The target audience for this activity includes pharmacists and nurses. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the basic immunology and impact  of HIV-1 and HIV-2
  • Identify symptomatology associated with acute HIV infection
  • Explain effects of untreated HIV on the body
