Every year in the U.S., pneumococcal disease kills thousands of adults, and many more end up hospitalized, yet vaccination rates lag behind public health standards. Pharmacists are in a strong position to ensure that those adults of highest need receive timely vaccination according to the most recent national recommendations.

This activity will provide you with strategies for improving vaccination rates in eligible patients and underserved populations, as well as tactics for overcoming common barriers to improve outcomes and reduce the high burden of this disease on the health system. Expert faculty will present case scenarios.

Learning Objectives

The target audience for this activity includes pharmacists working in community, long-term care and health-system settings. At the completion of this webinar, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the incidence of and morbidity and mortality associated with pneumococcal disease in elderly and high-risk patients.
  • Review current pneumococcal immunization recommendations and schedules in eligible adults.
  • Discuss the pharmacology, cost-effectiveness and adverse effects of pneumococcal vaccines.
  • Explain strategies by which pharmacists may improve pneumococcal vaccination rates in a variety of health care settings and how outcomes may be measured.
  • Describe ways in which pharmacists may reduce the burden of pneumococcal disease and promote antimicrobial stewardship through improved immunization programs.
