Continuous Venous Oxygen Saturation Monitoring in the Unstable Patient

Program Description

This Dynamic CD program provides an overview of continuous venous oxygen saturation monitoring in unstable patients. Included are a discussion of balance between oxygen supply and demand; the unstable states in which venous oxygen saturation monitoring is necessary; and a close-up look at using continuous monitoring devices in the healthcare setting.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, physicians and nurses will be able to:

  • Define differences between mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) and central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2)

  • Outline differences between PA and CV catheters with fiberoptic technology

  • Identify clinical situations that benefit from continuous venous oxygen saturation monitoring

  • Describe procedures for using monitoring devices Identify abnormal ScvO2 values and understand management implications
