Prevention of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections:
Central Line Bundles
Description:Of the many risk factors for catheter-related bloodstream infections, many are controllable and can be addressed through institutional implementation of a central line bundle and education on infection prevention. Bundles are a group of best practices that individually improve care, but when applied together result in substantially greater improvement. The purpose of this module is to explain the essential elements of central line bundles and tools for their successful implementation.
Learning objectives:
- Identify risk factors associated with catheter-related bloodstream infections.
- Explain the elements of a central line bundle.
- Describe tools for successful implementation of a central line bundle.
- Detail clinical data that support the use of central line bundles

Learning objectives:
- Discuss the importance of hand hygiene in preventing central line−associated bloodstream infections.
- Identify barriers to proper hand hygiene among healthcare workers and strategies to overcome such barriers.
- Identify proper hand hygiene techniques according to available guidelines.

Prevention of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections:
Catheter Care and Maintenance
Description:Systemic infections associated with the placement of central line catheters, or CLABSIs, are the cause of significant morbidity and mortality. However, the risk of these infections can be reduced with proper catheter care and maintenance. This module will review some of the risk factors for CLABSIs and steps in the care and maintenance of central venous catheters that help in preventing or reducing the risk of these infections.
Learning objectives:
- Describe the different types of central venous catheters.
- Identify risk factors associated with central venous catheter associated bloodstream infections.
- Explain the steps in catheter care that are critical in maintaining function of the catheter.
- For a given patient, recognize inappropriate steps in the care of central venous catheters.
- Describe complications associated with central venous catheters, methods to reduce the risk of these complications, and possible treatments.
