Challenges with PCA, Patient Safety and Technology

Program Description This program focuses on the safe and effective use of Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA). The program covers PCA patient selection, potential failure points in the PCA process, FMEA application in the PCA process and the role of nursing in PCA.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists and nurses will be able to:

• Outline patient safety concerns with PCA

• Assess the adequacy of patient analgesia
• Analyze data generated from infusion technology for use in patient care improvement using Failure Mode and Effects Analysis
• Describe quality improvement models for PCA and the role of nursing in these models
