Program Description
Careful selection of analgesic and sedative medications
is essential in critical care. Achieving a balance
between patient comfort and safe ventilation involves
both science and art. This program will emphasize the
importance of teamwork in achieving optimum analgesia
and sedation in the ICU. |
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, physicians, nurses,
and pharmacists will be
able to:

Discuss the importance of the interdisciplinary team and
ways to optimize nurse-physician interaction in patient
care

Identify common factors that influence a successful
balance between patient comfort and optimal ventilation

Discuss pharmacokinetic, cardiorespiratory, clinical,
and CNS effects of the current analgesic and sedative
agents

Discuss objective tools to measure pain, anxiety, and
delirium

This activity has been planned and implemented in
accordance with the essential Areas and Policies of the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
(ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of ProCE, Inc. and the
National Association of Managed Care Physicians (NAMCP). The
NAMCP is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing
medical education (CME) to physicians. The NAMCP designates
this educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA
Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim
credit commensurate with the extent of their participation

assigned to this knowledge-based home-study program (initial
release date 09-30-09). This program is approved for 1.5
contact hours (0.15 CEUs) in states that recognize ACPE
providers. The program is provided at no cost to
participants. Statements of credit will be issued online
upon completion of the program evaluation and the post-test
with a score of 70% or higher. No partial credit will be
given.
Nurses
Nurse CE is provided for this program through
collaboration between ProCE and Wild Iris Medical Education.
Wild Iris Medical Education, WSNA CEARP Provider number
PA-5/Feb/11, is an approved provider of continuing education
by the Washington State Nurses Association, an accredited
approver by the Nurses' Credentialing Center's Commission on
Accreditation. California Board of Registered Nursing
Provider #12300. This activity provides 1.5 contact hours of
nurse credit.
