Activity Description

Pharmacy Technicians are key players in the healthcare team, and they play a vital role in the management of cancer patients. This module is for pharmacy technicians who are interested in exploring and expanding their knowledge of oncology patient management.

Topics to be discussed include overview of cancer and important terminology in cancer care, financial barriers to oncology patient care, safe handling of oncology drugs and an introduction to cancer treatment regimens where colorectal cancer treatments are reviewed.

Learning Objectives

The target audience for this activity includes pharmacy technicians. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define hazardous medications and the safety risks associated with antineoplastic drugs.
  • Identify safety procedures pharmacies can take to limit staff's risk of exposure.
  • Compare nuances with financial barriers for oral anti-cancer therapy and resources available to reduce financial toxicity.
  • Describe differences in oral-anticancer therapy administration, storage, and safe handling.
  • List treatment regimens for colorectal cancer that may require a genetic mutation for usage.
