Vaccine uptake in underserved populations has lagged far behind Healthy People
2020 goals. Coupled with unique barriers to uptake and a disproportionate amount of
complications from COVID-19, the 2020-2021 flu season may prove particularly deadly
for the black, Hispanic, and Native American populations in the US. The overall rate
of vaccination in US adults falls far below recommended levels. Fortunately, there
is evidence that vaccine initiatives have a positive effect on immunization rates,
increasing access to immunization for the public.
Although pharmacists and other immunizers are well-prepared to identify individuals
in need of vaccines and teach patients about vaccines and vaccine-preventable disease,
education has not focused on cultural competency or disparities between different
minority communities in vaccine uptake. This activity will introduce background knowledge
on the clinical impact of low vaccination rates in minorities, social influences that
guide individual vaccine decisions, and help to improve comfort in identifying and
counseling vulnerable underserved populations.
The target audience for this activity includes pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
