The field of gene therapy is evolving and rapidly advancing. New therapies can clinically transform the natural history of disease for some patients. In others, clinical trials show promise but long-term effects remain unknown. Organizational readiness should be a priority for pharmacists, to address the predicted influx of gene therapies into the marketplace. Pharmacists handling gene therapies should be familiar with containment strategies to prevent cross-contamination, and to protect themselves and the environment. Development of standard operating procedures and staff training are key responsibilities of the pharmacist managing gene therapies.
