Activity Description

This module is for pharmacy technicians who are interested in exploring and expanding their knowledge of solid organ transplant patient management. Technicians will learn about the presentation, risk factors and contraindications to transplantation. Once a patient receives a transplant, patients are started on maintenance immunosuppressants, which will be discussed including formulations, storage, and REMS programs. An overview of complications including post-transplant infections and medications used to prevent infection will be discussed. Transplant medication insurance coverage and financial assistance will be reviewed since specialty pharmacies perform important services for patients regarding medication insurance coverage, access, and adherence to post-transplant medications.

Learning Objectives

The target audience for this activity includes pharmacy technicians. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize the presentation, risk factors, and contraindications to transplant.
  • Describe the goals of transplant.
  • Explain the current post-transplant medication treatment options.
  • Review the important workflow process to consider when dispensing medications post-transplant.
